Horror of Ragging
Ragging is prohibited and a punishable offence. Despite being warned not to resort to the evil practice, five students of a nursing college in Kottayam district ragged their juniors.
The victims filed a complaint against the seniors at the Gandhinagar police station and five third-year students of Government Nursing College in Kottayam were taken into custody.
The arrested were identified as Samuel Johnson, NS Jeeva, KP Rahul Raj, C Rijil Jith and Vivek NP.
Being nursing students, the youth could have good knowledge about the pain and time taken for healing the wounds, both physical and mental. However, setting all these factors aside, the five accused used to make cuts over the bodies of the juniors and then pour lotion on the cuts.
According to the complaint, the police said that when the victims used to cry in pain, the accused would apply ointment on their mouth and body parts.
The juniors complained of more harassment by the seniors. By stripping them naked, the seniors used to hang dumbbells from their private parts, the complaint stated. Not stopping here, the accused even injured them using stationery items like compass.
The five seniors also collected Rs 800 from the juniors to purchase liquor and for their own expenses. Further, they forced the juniors to drink alcohol and used to record the visuals, to threaten them. If they revealed of the ragging, the seniors would make this footage public.
The five accused students were suspended from college after the College Principal investigated into the complaint.
Principal in-charge Dr Lini Joseph said the students had not informed the college about the ragging. “The parents of the junior students called the class teacher to inform about the ragging. Investigation was carried out and action was taken. A special committee will be appointed and then further action will be taken,” she said.
