US President Donald Trump announced that reciprocal tariffs will be imposed on India, China, and other nations starting April 2, 2025. Speaking to the Joint Session of Congress, Trump criticized the high tariffs imposed by countries like India, China, the European Union, and others, calling it “very unfair.” He pointed out that nations like India charge significantly higher tariffs on US products compared to the US tariffs on their goods, with India imposing auto tariffs exceeding 100%.
Trump emphasized that other countries, including China and South Korea, impose much higher tariffs on US products than the US does on theirs, which he called an unfair trade system. He declared that the US would now retaliate with reciprocal tariffs, meaning that any tariffs imposed on the US would be matched by the US, beginning April 2. Trump’s announcement underlined his stance that the US has been taken advantage of in global trade for decades.
