Nepal is facing one of its biggest crises in recent history. While the streets are already boiling with massive youth protests, the unrest has now spread into the prisons. In a shocking turn of events, nearly 7,000 inmates managed to escape from different jails across the country after violent clashes and arson.
Reports say that prisoners attacked guards, set fires, and even scaled prison walls to flee. Major breakouts were reported from prisons in Kathmandu, Chitwan, Dillibazar, Jaleshwar, Kailali, and Nakku. In Noubasta juvenile home, violence turned deadly when security forces opened fire, leaving five minors dead after inmates tried to snatch weapons.
One of the worst incidents took place at Sindhuli prison where a massive fire broke out, allowing 471 prisoners, including 43 women, to escape. Another 500 inmates fled from a jail in Nawalparasi district. The chaos has even spilled across borders, with Indian security forces capturing five escapees near the Indo-Nepal border.
Amid this turmoil, authorities temporarily shut down Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport before reopening it later in the evening. The government has now deployed the army, imposed curfew nationwide, and taken emergency steps to protect citizens and property.
The unrest is being fueled by public anger against the government. Youth groups are demanding an end to corruption, lifting of social media restrictions, and a new constitution. President Ramchandra Paudel is expected to meet protest leaders soon, but tensions remain high.
With street protests and prison breakouts happening at the same time, Nepal is sliding deeper into instability. Analysts say the country is now facing a historic challenge, with law and order, political stability, and public trust all collapsing together.
