A 42 year old man was found dead at his house on Sunday, days after a video accusing him of misbehaving with a woman on a bus went viral on social media, police said.
The man was identified as Deepak U, a native of Puthiyara, who was staying at Govindhapuram in Kozhikode. According to police, Deepak was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside his bedroom.
Early in the morning around 7 am, his parents tried to wake him up but got no response. With the help of neighbours, they opened the door and found him dead. Police were informed immediately and later confirmed the death.
Family members said Deepak was working in a textile company and had travelled to Kannur on Friday for work. On the same day, a woman passenger recorded a video on a bus, accusing him of misbehaving with her. The video was shared widely on social media and soon reached Deepak.
Relatives claimed that Deepak strongly denied the allegation and was under severe mental stress after the video went viral. They said he was deeply disturbed by the public reaction.
Police have registered a case of unnatural death and started an investigation. Preliminary inquiry suggests it is a suspected suicide case. Police are also looking into the circumstances under which the video was circulated and its impact on the deceased.
