Undercover Women Cops Leave Criminals Cornered

A month after Malkajgiri Commissioner of Police V. Sumathi’s undercover operation to assess women’s safety on Hyderabad streets, a woman constable carried out a decoy operation which helped the cops bust foetal sex determination racket at Hayagriva Hospital in Vanasthalipuram.

These initiatives by the women police should be appreciated as they are braving to face the murkier world. The brave act by women cops reflects that they too are competent with their male counterparts in discharging their duties and dynamic in confronting real situations.

Such decoy operations are most needed as it would not only help the police check crime but also gain knowledge about mischievous people and criminals, when left unchecked.

In the latest operation, posing as a patient, the woman cop approached the hospital and helped police bust the network. Police arrested Hayagriva hospital director Korra Raju, receptionist Lokesh and lab technician Vijay Kumar, working at Sri Sai Dhanush Clinic in Tukkuguda. Sex determination tests are being held at both Vanasthalipuram and Tukkuguda hospitals. The foetal sex determination tests have been banned to check female foeticide.

After the woman cop consulted the doctors at the hospital, Raju and Lokesh assured her that arrangements would be made to reveal the sex of the unborn child. They asked her to meet Vijay Kumar and told her he would do scanning and disclose the sex of the foetus.

After gaining this information, police teams raided Sri Sai Dhanush Clinic at Tukkuguda and arrested Vijay Kumar for conducting the illegal activity.

All the three have been booked under the PCPNDT Act, prohibiting sex selection and disclosure of sex of an unborn child.

A month ago, CP Sumathi also held an undercover operation. Wearing plain clothes, Sumathi posed as a regular commuter and stood at the Dilsukhnagar bus station between 12.30 am to 3.30 am.

During the 3-hour operation, the IPS officer was approached by nearly 40 men, including students and employees supposedly under the influence of alcohol and ganja. Soon they were taken into custody by other cops in plainclothes standing nearby the bus station.
