YouTube is making a major change to the way it counts video views. From August 24, 2026, a view will be counted as soon as a video starts playing from the first frame.
This change will apply to regular YouTube videos as well as other formats. Because of this, creators may see their public view counts increase faster than before.
The interesting part is that YouTube will still track how long people actually watch a video. The platform will show this through its “Engaged views” metric in YouTube Analytics.
YouTube has also clarified that this change will not directly affect creator earnings or YouTube Partner Program eligibility. Revenue will continue to depend on factors such as engaged views and watch time.
For creators, the biggest difference will be in the public view count. A person who starts a video and leaves quickly could still add to the video’s view number.
So, from August 24, YouTube views may rise faster, but watch time and audience engagement will remain important for creators.
