Football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to his 23 year journey with Portugal. The 41 year old confirmed his decision through a social media post.
Ronaldo said it was time to hand back Portugal’s iconic number 7 jersey after representing the country for more than two decades. He described it as an emotional decision.
The Portuguese superstar made 234 appearances for his national team and scored 146 goals. He holds the world record for the most international appearances and goals in men’s football.
Ronaldo played a key role in Portugal’s historic Euro 2016 triumph and also helped the team win the UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025. His international career remains one of the most successful in football history.
With this announcement, one of football’s greatest international journeys has come to an end. However, Ronaldo is yet to retire from club football, where he continues to represent Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr.
