‘Ever Given’ Ship Stuck Again, This Time Over Money

The infamous Suez blockage by Ever Given container ship is stuck again, this time over compensation.

The Ever Given container ship has been impounded after its owner refused to pay a compensation of 655 million euros for blocking the Suez Canal. On April 12, a court in the Suez Canal city of Ismailia issued an order to impound the ship after the ship owner refused to pay any compensation.

So, now the ship is physically free from the canal blockage but is not free to leave the country until the case is settled. The Japanese owner, Shoei Kisen Kaisha Ltd has to settle the compensation amount, otherwise, the ship stays impounded.

Reportedly, the shipowner does not want to pay anything, but the amount asked appears to be around $900 million (655 million euros). The compensation is said to be covering the cost of the salvage operation that lasted for days and lost transit fees for the week it was blocked also the costs of stalled canal traffic.
