In a historic moment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid the foundation stone for the ‘Temple Of Democracy’ i.e new building of Parliament in New Delhi today. Under Central Vista Project, Tata groups will be the charge of its construction and the project will cost Rs 971 crore.
The proposed four-storied building would sprawl over an area of 64,500 sq meters and will have a grand Constitution Hall to showcase India’s democratic heritage, a lounge for members of Parliament, multiple committee rooms, dining areas and ample parking space.
“This is a day of pride for over 130 crore Indians when we are witnessing this historic moment. The new Parliament building is an example of the co-existence of the new and the old. I can never forget the moment in my life when I had the opportunity to come to Parliament House for the first time in 2014 as an MP. Then before stepping into this temple of democracy, I bowed my head and saluted this temple of democracy,” said the PM after the ceremony is done.
The new Parliament will have seating capacity for 888 members in the Lok Sabha Chamber and for 384 members in the Rajya Sabha chamber. This is more compared to the current strength of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha which are 543 and 245 respectively. The current Parliament is 93 years old and was built in the British period.
The Centre wants the construction of new Parliament to be completed by the time of India’s 75th Independence Day i.e, by August 2022.
Union home minister Amit Shah, defence minister Rajnath Singh, Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, foreign envoys and Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla have graced the ground-breaking ceremony.
