Watch: How Madhavan Excels In Biopic Characters!

Once a heartthrob for youngsters due to his charming onscreen presence and romantic roles, versatile actor R. Madhavan achieved the distinction of a reliable go-to artist who can bring real characters to life on the big screen with utmost sincerity.

He successfully pulled off real life characters like Ajay Singh Rathod in Rang De Basanti, Shyam Saxena in Guru, Nambi Narayanan in Rocketry and Ajay Sanyal in Dhurandhar. Up next, he is coming up with another biopic GD Naidu, in which he plays the titular role.

In an interview with Gulte pro, Madhavan shares his perspective on playing real-life (biopic) characters compared to fictional ones. When he was asked about his approach in portraying real figures differently than fictional dramatic characters, the actor replied that believability comes first whether it is a real life or fictional role.

He said the core job of an actor is to make the character so authentic that the audience fully believes they exist. He opined that an actor has freedom with a fictional character whereas he is often constrained by the person’s actual look, body frame, and physical traits when it is a real person’s biopic.

Adding more weight to his opinion, he explained that when the public doesn’t widely know how the real person looks like, the actor has more freedom as getting close to their appearance is usually enough to convince the viewers.

However, for familiar personalities or specific cases like Rocketry, where the real Nambi Narayanan appeared in the climax, matching the look strictly was essential so the audience felt a seamless emotional transition without pointing out the difference in the appearance.

Madhavan feels that once the physical look and appearance details are matched, the effort to create a believable, dramatic performance is exactly the same for both fictional and real-life roles.
