Thalapathy Vijay Stands Tall as Tamil Cinema’s Mr Box Office

With Superstar Rajinikanth’s Coolie not performing to the expectations at the box office, there is a debate going on in social media about who the biggest crowd puller is in Tamil industry. Time and again, Thalapathy Vijay proved the fact that he is the big star in Tamil who can register huge revenues with just word of mouth.

Gone are those days where the star power used to help the films survive at the box office. But, of late, with the star power fading and the content taking the front seat, only few stars are managing to pull off box office wonders. Thalapathy Vijay proved this with solid box office numbers, with the films like Varisu and Goat. Irrespective of the story and the genre, Vijay always maintained a consistency in pulling crowds to theatres.

On the flip side, Ajith had two releases this year which opened to mixed reviews. Both the films struggled with the box office numbers. Meanwhile, Rajini made a comeback with Jailer but his consecutive films Vettaiyaan and Coolie now did not make a big impact. Although Coolie is still performing, the dream run is far away from reality. It was expected to become the first 1000 crore film from Tamil cinema due to the insane hype, but with mixed talk, the chances of reaching that milestone look slim. Still, the film is doing good at the box office this weekend, but the weekdays test lies ahead. Even Kamal tasted duds with Indian 2 and Thug Life.

With Vijay already confirming his reitrement and Jana Nayagan being his last theatrical release, it has to be seen if the consistency is maintained with the new release. Multiple factors will contribute to the film having a grand opening. The rest all depends on the word of mouth again.
