Dulquer Salmaan’s upcoming film Kaantha is gearing up for worldwide release this Friday (November 14), and just yesterday, days before its release, the film landed in legal trouble. B. Thiagarajan, the grandson of veteran Tamil actor and singer M.K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, filed a complaint at the Chennai Civil Court, alleging that Kaantha is based on his grandfather’s life and it was made without taking the family’s consent. He accused the movie’s team of portraying Thiagarajan in a negative light.
This case has raised doubts over the release of the film. Many people felt that the movie might get postponed. However, the film’s producer, Rana Daggubati, confirmed that the allegations are baseless as the film has no real reference at all and assured that Kaantha will hit the screens on November 14.
Earlier this morning, Rana announced a Q and A session on X. During the interaction, a fan asked him, “It’s said there is a Case on stopping the #Kaantha movie release in Chennai ?? Is this true ?? #KaanthaNov14.” Answering the same, Rana wrote, “It’s pretty baseless the film has no real reference at all. See you in cinemas Nov14th.”
In many interviews, Rana and Dulquer affirmed that Kaantha is a purely fictional tale which was partly inspired by a few instances of the bygone era of Tamil cinema in the 1950s. Going by Rana’s statement, it looks like his team is confident of proving the allegations wrong and releasing the film as scheduled.
Apart from bankrolling this period drama, Rana also played a key role in it. The film also features Samuthirakani and Bhagyashri Bhorse in other lead roles.
