Indian-origin Surgeon Jailed in UK for Sexual Misconduct

An Indian-origin surgeon in UK has been sentenced to six years in prison for repeatedly groping female colleagues. The court described the 55-year-old surgeon, Amal Bose, as “a sexual predator hiding in plain sight.” He has exploited his senior position and professional reputation to target junior staff members over a five-year period, from 2017 to 2022.

In 2023, the National Health Service (NHS) trust was suspended when he worked as the head of the cardiovascular surgery department at Blackpool Victoria Hospital in Lancashire, following complaints from the staff of sexual exploitation. A report in the Manchester Evening News stated that during the trial, he was characterized as ‘arrogant and crude’, having sexually assaulted five members of his team. As he was a senior member in the team, the victims could not challenge him or deny his indecent behavior.

Disgraceful Act

Dr Bose grabbed one nurse’s bre*st as she was helping him prepare for surgery at the hospital, UK’s Daily Mail reported. Another woman complained that Bose groped her while reaching into her top pocket for a pen, calling her ‘fresh meat’. One another colleague alleged that the father-of-five pulled down her top and remarked, “I thought that is where you put my cup of tea.”

After his suspension, Bose worked as a parcel delivery driver, which is a sudden fall from his medical profession. The court described the disgraced medical professional as “highly sexualized”. His conviction also strengthens a troubling pattern — he is the sixth medical practitioner from the same Lancashire hospital to be jailed for serious criminal offences in the past two years.

Judge’s Remarks

During the trial at the Preston Crown Court, Judge Ian Unsworth told Bose that he had exploited his ‘exalted position’ to prey upon colleagues, operating under the belief that could act “with impunity”. Condemning his conduct as sexually charged, targeted and predatory, the Judge added that Bose regarded female staff as being there “to satisfy his own sexual needs and urges,” according to Daily Mail. At the same time, the court acknowledged that Bose had been a “dedicated, highly-skilled surgeon” to whom many patients owed their lives, but that does not mitigate the gravity of the offences.

Bose was charged with 14 counts of sexual assault under Section 3 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003, relating to incidents involving six female colleagues between 2017 and 2022. All the victims were members of staff at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. During the trial, the court was told that Bose had attempted to downplay his actions and telling police at the time of his arrest that it was only flirting.
