Ideally, the state assembly must be an extremely progressive enclosure as several crucial laws and legislations are made here. But in several states, the assembly houses have become mere performative pieces.
A similar scenario unfold in Punjab today as the opposition parties made a series of shocking allegations against chief minister Bhagwant Mann.
The oposition parties in Punjab including the Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal staged a protest in the assembly. They claimed on record that the chief minister of Punjab came to the Assembly in a drunk and intoxicated state.
The Congress MLA demanded an immediate intervention by the speaker of the house as they called for an alcohol test on all the MLAs in the house on priority.
It is extremely shocking to see an assembly house in India staging a workout protest, saying that the chief minister is drunk and intoxicated. And particularly so in a state like Punjab, which often faces serious complaints with regard to socialism.
But in the end, Punjab assembly house did not undergo an alcohol or independent medical check of any kind. But the nature of the allegations made against the chief minister are pretty serious here.
