KCR is preparing to take his political fight with the Congress government from the Assembly to the ground. In a move that could give the BRS a fresh political push, former Telangana Chief Minister and BRS president K Chandrashekar Rao has announced that he will soon undertake a padayatra on water and irrigation issues, taking the fight directly to major projects and farmers. KCR said he would visit the Kaleshwaram and Palamuru irrigation projects along with around one lakh farmers, signalling that water and irrigation are set to become major weapons in the BRS’s political campaign against the Congress government.
“I will soon undertake a padayatra for water. I will visit Kaleshwaram and Palamuru projects along with one lakh farmers,” KCR said at the BRS Legislature Party meeting held at his farmhouse in Erravalli, Siddipet district.
The meeting was chaired by KCR and attended by BRS working president KT Rama Rao, former minister T Harish Rao and several party MLAs and MLCs. The proposed padayatra comes at a politically significant time. Irrigation, farmer concerns and the future of major water projects remain sensitive issues in Telangana, giving the BRS an opportunity to attack the Congress government on its handling of the state’s water resources.
By planning to travel with one lakh farmers, KCR appears to be aiming for more than a political tour. The BRS is seeking to turn the water issue into a mass mobilisation programme and rebuild its connect with farmers. The move could put the Revanth Reddy government under renewed pressure, particularly over Kaleshwaram, Palamuru and the availability of irrigation water.
The BRS Legislature Party meeting also focused on the upcoming Assembly sessions. KCR discussed key public issues with party legislators and directed them on how to take on the Congress government inside the House. The BRS is expected to aggressively raise issues concerning farmers, irrigation, water availability and government failures, turning the Assembly into another front in its battle against Congress.
At the same time, Congress leaders have repeatedly attacked KCR over his absence from Assembly proceedings and questioned his role as Leader of the Opposition. KCR, however, appears to be choosing a different battlefield. Instead of returning to the Assembly, he is preparing to take the political fight to the farmers and irrigation projects.
