India Crosses 140 Crore Population

On World Population Day today, we learnt that India will overtake China as the world’s most populated nation next year. Yes, you heard it exactly right! We are going to overpower China in terms of population. As of today, the population of India has crossed 140 crore.

According to the World Population Prospects 2022 report by the Population Division of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the world’s population will be eight billion by mid-November, 8.5 billion in 2030, and 9.7 billion in 2050. It is anticipated that the world population will reach a high of around 10.4 billion people during the 2080s and then remain there until 2100, expanding at its slowest rate since World War II.

Moreover, in 2023, India is expected to overtake China as the world’s most populated nation. In just eight nations, including India, more than half of the predicted rise in the world’s population by 2050 would be witnessed.

Of these, Asia now contains 4.7 billion people, making up 61% of the world’s population, followed by Africa (1.3 billion), Europe (750 million), Latin America and the Caribbean (650 million), and Oceania (370 million). The remaining 5% of people live in Northern America and Oceania (43 million).

India was one of the ten nations with a net migration expected to have exceeded 1 million between 2010 and 2021. The outflows in several of these nations were brought about by transient labour migrations. Pakistan experienced the biggest net outflow of migrants (16.5 million).

India had a 1.21 billion-person population as per the 2011 Census. According to United Nations statistics from 2020 and Worldometer data from 2022, the population of India is now predicted to be over 1.37 billion and will reach approximately 1,508,525,200,416 in 2022.

While Uttar Pradesh is the most populated state with a 23.32 crore population, Lakshadweep is the least populated state with a 68,000 population. Telangana bags 12th place with 3.79 crore people, and Andhra Pradesh is one step ahead, standing in 10th position with 5.3 crore people.

“This year’s World Population Day (July 11) falls during a milestone year, when we anticipate the birth of the Earth’s eight billionth inhabitant. “This is an occasion to celebrate our diversity, recognise our common humanity, and marvel at advancements in health that have extended lifespans and dramatically reduced maternal and child mortality rates,” UN Secretary-General António Guterres said.
