A 24-year-old woman approached an astrologer to seek clarification on her marriage and eventually, lost Rs 5.9 lakh.
The so-called astrologer identified himself as Vijay Kumar told the woman that hers would be a love marriage but that there were some issues in her horoscope that needed corrective measures like pujas to get fixed. He asked the woman to give money to perform the pujas.
According to the complaint lodged with the police, the woman, a resident of Electronics City and an employee in a private firm, found an account named ‘splno1indianastrologer’ on Instagram on Jan 5. Seeing the photo of Aghori baba in the profile and with the user claiming to be an ‘expert astrologer’, she messaged the person.
He told his name is Vijay Kumar and shared his mobile number. He asked her to send her name and date of birth on WhatsApp to check her horoscope. As she shared the details, Vijay Kumar told her that it was a love marriage for her.
After gaining the confidence of the woman, he told her about a puja which needs to be performed to fix some minor issue in her horoscope and asked her to send Rs 1,820. As it was not a large amount, she agreed to pay and Vijay asked her to transfer the money through a digital payment app.
Then he started telling one after another issues in the horoscope and asked her for more money to do puja which totaled to nearly Rs 6 lakh.
At this moment, she realized that Vijay was taking advantage of her anxiety and refused to pay him any more. Further, she asked him to pay back the money she had already given him.
Vijay managed to pay back Rs 13,000 but later he threatened her. He said he would kill himself and name her in the suicide note.
After a few days, one more person, Prashant, called her and said he was an advocate. He informed her that Vijay was ready to kill himself if she forced him to return the money, as he had already used the funds for various pujas.
Finding no way to deal with the issue, the woman approached police.
Police said that the entire fraud was orchestrated by cyber criminals. There is no astrologer or advocate in the episode in reality.
A case has been booked against Vijay Kumar and Prashant under the Information Technology Act and BNS Section 318 (cheating).
