The never-ending ticket price debate is also linked with the growing prices of popcorn at multiplexes. In the PVR Inox chain, the prices of popcorn are always debatable, and the common opinion is that it is a costly experience for a family to experience a new film. In this context, PVR INOX MD Ajay Bijli reveals that their prices are often misunderstood.
When it was pointed out that Rs 400 popcorn is costly, Ajay corrected, saying that their popcorn price begins at 159 rupees.
“It starts at Rs 159. Again, the Rs 400 popcorn price is for a high-end cinema. And by the way, you get unlimited refills with that Rs 400. People only read the headlines. They don’t read the whole thing,” he said.
Additionally, he added, “I don’t think ticket prices are high at all because you can look at our published data, Rs 259 for an experience that we get I don’t think it’s high.”
Ajay Bijli explained why premium cinema prices are often misunderstood and wrongly extrapolated across all screens. He also addressed the much-debated popcorn pricing issue, including unlimited refills and the GST controversy around caramel versus salted popcorn in the interview.
